Pohowera | Banded dotterel monitoring
I had a first meeting with the group leader of a Pohowera | Banded Dotterel monitoring group called MIRO in Eastbourne, across the harbour from the Wellington CBD. I’ve done some limited work with a Toutouwai | North Island Robin monitoring group in Waimapihi close to where I’m living, but I’m hoping for something hands-on, where I can do flagging of juvenile birds, welfare checks, and whatever else might be needed.

Pohowera are classified as “at risk - declining” in New Zealand. We found four birds during our visit to the beach today, but it’s early in the season, and birds are not yet pairing up and building nests, so they tend to keep their distance. Here’s a photo I took of the beach.
