One rule all sports should adopt from Rugby
As I’m watching World Cup football (soccer), I’m reminded of how this great sport is sometimes spoiled by all the theatrics, the faking of fouls, and the disputing of virtually every call from referees. Every time the whistle blows, the outrage begins. Another sport I love, tennis, is also frequently marred and delayed by arguing with referees.
Rugby, however, has specific rules about dissent, including “gestures, back chat, and surrounding a referee” as grounds for a penalty. Typically, only the captain is allowed to question a call and must do so respectfully or risk a penalty.
This makes the games focus on the sport itself and minimise delays. I think it also encourages respect for referees. When you see your favourite players complain about every call that goes against them, you start to think maybe all the referees are just terrible, especially if your team is losing.
I think all sports should adopt this rule from rugby.
